Homeschool, Update

Oops

I know I said I would update. The thing is for some reason this homeschool year has been chaotic. So I’m not going to go into much detail and whatnot. I did however want to show y’all what our weekly schedule has been for the most part. It’s typically a 4 to 5 hour day depending on their level. Though sometimes we are done earlier. The youngest however is typically done between 45 minutes to an hour. This schedule more so reflects the older four kiddos, while the bottom one reflects the youngest.

Homeschool, My Thoughts, Update

Sorry…

I want to apologize for the lack of updates. I know I promised. Over the last 8 months there have been a lot of changes around our home and family. Some good and others not so much.

My father was diagnosed with a health issue in August of last year and just recently had surgery. Although he’s getting semi back to normal he still has a ways to go.

Then finally my youngest nephew, Booger has come to stay with us and has joined our homeschool. So we are now homeschooling five boys all with different learning struggles. So I have not forgotten just been busy.

Thank you all for understanding!

Doctors and Homeschooling

Had to take the kiddos to their annual checkup. I always get slightly nervous with questions around schooling. Not that I’m ashamed or afraid of anything. It’s just that some, not all, judge heavily on things they don’t understand or don’t approve of. It could be simple ignorance, but that is easily corrected with answers and references. Thankfully, we were assigned a wonderful doctor that was homeschool friendly.

After Dino had his checkup, we were asked if we had any other concerns. So I brought up Dino’s behavior, meltdowns and such. So with all the checked boxes… It was nice to get confirmation that Dino is autistic and if need be we can get further testing to see where he falls on the spectrum and sign up for occupational therapy as the need arises such as if his behaviors or meltdowns start interfering with his daily routine and whatnot. So far we have it down to a science with him. The doctor said it was definitely better he’s homeschooled so that he can be in an environment suited for his needs.

Handyman got his inhaler updated and then his anxiety spiked at the mention of getting a shot. So we’ll have to wait to ease Handyman into getting his next booster shot at his next appointment. Handyman completely shut down after that. This only seems to confirm to the doctor that homeschooling to be the best thing for him. Since this is the same behavior and anxiety he displayed in his previous public school.

Bookworm had an ear ache that he only mentioned it until last night. It turned out he had an ear infection. We also got confirmation that due to the accident he was in 2019, that the few minutes that he was was unresponsive, he now has poor recall of some short and long term memories. Last year, when we had to reteach him how to tie his shoes was the major reason I wanted this confirmation. So with that the doctor said homeschool seems to be working with his memory issues and ADHD. So he can have one on one help and have a more repetitive schedule. This way he won’t fall behind. Which is wonderful to be acknowledged because for the 2021-2022 homeschool year I had to go back to the basics with him to get him almost to the level he should be.

Nothing really changed with Muscles. He still has dyslexia and ADHD, but with his anger issues and meltdowns have only slightly gotten better. In general it was probably best for them to be homeschooled so they can have individual help and focus they require.

Morning Rabbit Hole

Oh boy, here we go…
Debating and fact finding this morning!

This is how it went… First it was asking about shark facts. Which leads to how to prevent a shark attack and why sharks attack humans. Then wanting to know which animal kills more humans every year. To how hippopotamuses kill more humans than sharks. Which they discovered why hippopotamuses are super territorial. Then somehow spiraled to why can’t freshwater animals can’t survive in the ocean. That lead to how some saltwater animals can’t adapt to freshwater, but some can because marshes and swamps bridge the two waters.

Diving into that rabbit hole surely spirals quickly… That’s the fun of learning on a whim.

Homeschool, My Thoughts

End of the Year Thoughts

I just realized I’m going to have a 8th grader, 6th grader and two 3rd graders in Public School terms.

The levels these kiddos are scattered across the board. I had to learn this lesson the hard way. When I wanted so badly to “bring them up to grade.” I tried pushing and using different techniques. Nothing worked.

When they finally had grasped several pieces of the puzzle through lots of work at home….. then and only then did I notice their knowledge begin to blossom. I had to let go of my ideals of what a grade level consisted of. For them now, we just finished up what would be 7th, 5th, and 2nd grade in public school, they are doing math at a 5th/6th and 2nd/3rd grade level, history at a 7/8th grade, geography at a 7/8th grade, science at a 7/8th grade, reading at a 8th, 2nd/3rd and 1st/2nd grade, and spelling/Language Arts at a 6th, 2nd, and 1st grade.

And it’s all perfectly okay.

Because what this shows me is that they are neither behind nor ahead; they are precisely where they need to be. Their educational needs are being met in ways that access their strengths and support their weaknesses.

That’s exactly what education is supposed to be.

I suck at fractions and geometry. You won’t hear anyone one say to me, as an 39-year-old woman, that I am “behind” because I didn’t understand these concepts in high school. So why are we pressuring our kids to conform to such arbitrary rules?

If your kiddo struggles with a subject, they aren’t behind. They have a weakness.

We all have weaknesses.
Weaknesses are normal.

Your kiddo is absolutely normal.

Coming to a close…

Well this is our last week for the 2022-2023 homeschool year. Five whole days left! Then it will be summer break until July 10th when we once again begin. It seems like such a long time ago when we first started this journey, and now it seems to be just a blink of an eye some days.

I’ve been stressing myself out over next year’s curriculum and have come to the conclusion. That I need to branch out and take control by creating what my kiddos need instead of trying to bend curriculum schedules and materials for the boys. So in June I am doing a full overhaul of the curriculum and schedule.

Not only will I be rearranging our curriculum, well the only curriculum technically being used for next year will be for language arts and math. For the rest of the subjects, I will be using a mixture of old or vintage educational books along with newer up to date books as well to give the boys more well rounded lessons. I’ve done a lot of research working all this out. One thing I plan on implementing more of is the Charlotte Mason method of notebooking. We did it for a short time about a year ago. I’m hoping this coming year will be different as we use it for more than one subject.

Anyways look forward to the next post about what I will be using and some alternatives I have for backup.
